Be Grateful to Life

Dear colleagues and students,

Good Morning!

Today is Clear Bright Festival, which is also known as Tomb Sweeping Festival. Originating from Zhou Dynasty, it embraces a history of more than 2500 years. Traditionally, Chinese people observe the Festival by sweeping tombs, going outside and enjoying greenery of springtime, planting trees as well as flying kites.

Tomb Sweeping Festival is both one of 24 solar terms in lunar calendar and a traditional Chinese festival. Since 24 solar terms mirror the changes in climate and crops growing, ancient farmers depended on it to arrange their farming. According to an ancient work called Hundreds of Questions about Seasons, all things grow pretty clear and bright during this period. Thus it is called as Qingming, which refers to clearance and brightness. With Tomb Sweeping Festival falling, it turns warmer and rains more frequently, so it is considered to be the right time to start the spring plowing. People often say: “It’s the best time to sowing seeds and beans before and after Tomb Sweeping Festival” and “No time is better than this period for planting trees”, as reveals the close relation between this solar term and agriculture.

As a festival, it has several ways of observances and possesses special cultural connotation. It is said that in the Spring and Autumn Period (about 770-476B.C.), Chong’er, the son of the Duke of Jin was exiled and led an extraordinary poor life. Once, he got fainted from hunger. In order to save Chong’er’s life, Jie Zitui, one of many followers of the Duke, cut a piece of meat from his thigh to make a soup for Chong’er who became Duke 19 years later while Jie Zitui resigned and lived in seclusion. In hope of finding his life savior and rewarding him, Chong’er set on fire the hills Jie Zitui hiding in, considering it a way to get him out. Unexpectedly, the fire killed Jie Zitui. Feeling remorseful, Chong’er made that day as Hanshi Festival, on which people were not allowed to use fire to heat up food and only cold food could be eaten. As Hanshi Festival is close to Tomb Sweeping Festival, people then combined them and named it as Tomb Sweeping Festival.

Tomb Sweeping Festival is the most important mourning in China and people including Han nationality and some ethnic groups go to honor their ancestors on this day. The well-known poet Du Mu who lived in Tang Dynasty once depicted Tomb Sweeping Festival as followed: A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day. The mourner’s heart is breaking on his way. Where can a winehouse be found to drown his sadness? A cowherd points to Almond Flower Village in the distance.

Tomb Sweeping Festival always reminds us of those martyrs who have sacrificed their lives to the national revolution and liberation and also our relatives who have past away. It’s the martyrs’ blood and sweat that made this democratic and harmonious nation and it’s our beloved relatives’ industry and courage that made us strong and mature.

While mourning the dead, we should also cherish what we are having now. Our beautiful campus, the comfortable environment and joyful life have not come easily. All of them are gained by pain and hardship.

We should thank our parents and those who have given their love and care to us. We should love our parents and show kindness to those who are around us. And we should be full of gratitude to embrace every day of our life.

Thank you!
