When asked to give this speech, suggestions for topics included International Women’s Day or talking about the environment. We recognize International Women’s Day on March 8th and UN Earth Day recognized on March 20th.

As I was thinking about women’s rights and the environment, I realized these issues were about choices. It is people who choose to treat women unequally or not to give them respect. It is a society that makes choices whether or not to pollute.

While we may not know or fully understand the outcome of our decisions, we are still responsible. If we know that a negative outcome is certain, then we should take action to avoid that outcome. If we know there is benefit from taking action, then we cannot sit still and do nothing.

While studying at an American university, a Chinese student described her experience of growing up in Chinese society:

“…the road that you follow might not be the one that you chose by yourself. It has been set up or designed by powerful others. You just follow it. It’s like the subway and you just follow it. There was something invisible that could truly control yourself.”

I do not think this statement is true, especially when I think of our students. The road is yours to build.

Maple Leafers have opportunities that many others do not have. Not only do our students study abroad, but they can take their life and learning into their own hands. A student who asks questions and seeks out answers is making choices very different from a student who waits to be told the answers. A student who is not afraid to take chances will often meet failure, but they will also learn much more than someone who is waiting for others to tell them what to do.

While we often have little control over the consequences, we have control over our decisions. In the cafeteria, a choice between rice or noodles carries small consequences. However, whether you wish to treat a woman equally and with respect has much larger consequences. Similarly, it is up to you whether you wish to reduce, recycle and reuse. We know what consequences will likely result, but again the decision is still yours.

We can choose to be fearless and really learn something about life or we can give up those chances and see what happens. We can choose to respect each other and our earth, or we can choose to see nothing beyond the tip of our noses. History clearly tells us what people of the former type will achieve compared to what people of the latter type will achieve. The choice is yours.
