Say yes

---伏羲家庭学生吴芑涵“枫叶杯”英语演讲比赛讲稿

A while ago, I watched the film YES MAN, the main character, Carl Allen – he’s played by Jim Carrey - is a lonely man with low self-esteem who says “no” to almost everything. His friends worry about his negative outlook, but they can’t change his attitude. Nobody can, until one day, an old schoolmate convinces him to sighn up in a personal development program called “Yes Man”, where the main tenet of the “yes man” program is to abandon negative thoughts by saying “yes” to new opportunities. In the film, the motivational speaker says: “Say yes, you’re dead if you keep saying no , you won’t have a family ,you won’t even have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, because who wants to be with a person who is not living?”

I’m sure that very few people, regardless of age, desire to have a pointless and dull life. I mean, who wants to have a life that’s about as interesting as watching paint dry? Yet, the truth is every time we say no to an opportunity that could allow us to grow and discover something new about ourselves, we take step towards that life that none of us want…. a life that’s boring and extremely uneventful. I truly believe that as teenagers and adults , we should say yes! Say yes to new opportunities, say yes to volunteer work, say yes to tutoring, say yes to making someone else happy, say yes to giving and sharing, say yes to chances at new discoveries and experiences, say yes to anything that is positive and worthwhile. Say yes!

Last Spring , when my principal, Mr. Brecht, asked me if I wanted to volunteer as a translator for Canada’s national woman’s soccer, I immediately said yes. And in hindsight, my decision to accept Mr. Brecht’s offer was the best thing I could have done.  I spent seven days translating for a group of fascinating Canadian soccer players. I got to work with team managers and press agents. Most importantly, I was exposed to a whole new world and made a set of new friends. I can tell all of you today that I will never forget that week and it all happened because I said yes.

Adults, don’t be afraid to see the world. Say yes to an opportunity to travel away from home and experience new cultures. Say yes to mentoring programs, because as much as a young person may need guidance from you, you also need inspiration from that young person. Say yes to learning new things. Often times, adults act like once school is over and they get a job that learning somehow ends. We Chinese are always saying that it’s essential to keep learning no matter how old we get because there’s no such thing as having too much knowledge. Say yes to attend seminars and workshops. Say yes to book clubs and any opportunity you get to give back to your community. Say yes to humanity and watch how that transforms your life.

Getting back to the film YES MAN, Carl quickly discovers the power of saying “yes” and ultimately ends up living a colorful and meaningful life. He even manages to win the heart of the woman he loves. Now how’s that for a happy ending?

Well, we all know that out here in the real world happy endings don’t come so easy…if they come at all. As teenagers and adults, what we can do is say goodbye to fear and open ourselves up to new opportunities by simply saying “yes”. Thank you.
